What to Expect at Your First Visit
Taking the first step toward better mental health
Taking the first step toward mental health care takes courage. At SOS Wellness, our psychiatrists, nurse practitioners, therapists, and counselors are here to provide compassionate, professional care in a supportive environment.
Your first visit is about getting to know you, understanding your concerns, and developing a plan to help you feel better. Here’s what to expect.
Before Your Appointment
What to Bring
- Insurance card and ID
- List of current medications
- Any previous mental health records
- Questions you'd like to ask
What to Think About
- What's been troubling you
- When symptoms are worst
- What prompted you to seek help
- Your goals for treatment
- Come as you are. You don't need to have everything figured out. Simply show up honestly, and we'll work together from there.
During Your First Visit
Session Length and Format
Your first appointment will typically last 45 to 60 minutes. Depending on your needs, you’ll meet with one of our providers:
Psychiatrist or Nurse Practitioner:
Medical providers who can diagnose conditions, prescribe medication, and provide treatment recommendations
Therapist or Counselor:
Licensed mental health professionals who provide counseling and therapy services
What We'll Discuss
Your provider will have a conversation with you to better understand your situation. This isn’t an interrogation—it’s a collaborative discussion about your experiences.
- Your current concerns: What's happening in your life right now and what feels difficult
- Your symptoms: How you've been feeling physically and emotionally
- Your history: Relevant background information, family history, and past experiences
- Your daily life: How symptoms affect your work, relationships, sleep, and daily activities
- Your support system: Important people in your life and existing resources
- Your goals: What feeling better would look like for you
Assessment Tools
You may be asked to complete brief questionnaires that help your provider understand your symptoms more completely. Common assessments include
- Depression screening (PHQ-9)
- Anxiety assessment (GAD-7)
- Other specialized questionnaires based on your concerns
Note: These aren’t tests you pass or fail—they’re simply tools to ensure we have a complete picture of your experience.
Getting to Know You
As we talk, your provider will be getting a sense of how you're doing—things like how you're feeling today, how easily you can focus during our conversation, and how you're expressing your thoughts. This isn't a formal test or anything you need to worry about. It's simply part of having a genuine conversation and helps your provider understand the best ways to support you.
After Your Appointment
Understanding Your Results
Before you leave, your provider will discuss what they've learned and explain any diagnoses or concerns in clear, understandable language. You'll have the opportunity to ask questions and voice any concerns.
Your Treatment Plan
Based on your assessment, your provider will recommend a personalized treatment approach. This may include:
Therapy Services
Individual counseling, group therapy, or specialized therapeutic approaches tailored to your needs
Medication Management
If appropriate, medication options will be discussed, including benefits, side effects, and monitoring
Lifestyle Support
Guidance on sleep, exercise, stress management, and other factors that impact mental health
Follow-Up Care
Regular appointments to monitor progress and adjust treatment as needed
Connecting with Community Resources
After your visit, you may have the opportunity to briefly meet with our case management team to discuss any additional support you might need. Our case managers can help connect you with:
- Medicaid enrollment assistance
- Job and Family Services programs
- Food, housing, and utility assistance
- Healthcare coverage options
- Other community resources
This is entirely optional and based on your individual needs. If you need ongoing support with accessing resources, you can continue to follow up with case management throughout your treatment. Our goal is to ensure you have access to all available support.
Between-Session Activities
Your provider may suggest simple tasks or exercises to help you continue making progress between appointments, such as journaling, mindfulness practices, or mood tracking. These activities are tailored to your specific goals and are designed to support your treatment.
Case Management Services
- Who it's for: All clients who need coordinated support
- Our case managers ensure seamless care by coordinating between providers, connecting you with community resources, assisting with medication access, providing crisis support, and helping navigate insurance and benefits.
