Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) encompasses a range of neurodevelopmental conditions, including Autism, Asperger’s Syndrome, and Atypical Autism. While each individual presents differently, common traits include challenges with social interaction, communication, and sensory processing, along with unique strengths and interests.

Symptoms of autism typically appear within the first three years of life. While each person’s experience is unique, early signs may include:

  • Unusual eating or sleeping patterns

  • Self-injurious behavior

  • Repetitive language (echolalia)

  • Limited or intense interests

  • Delays in speech and communication

  • Difficulty with eye contact

  • Lack of pretend play

  • Inappropriate or out-of-context statements

  • Exceptional abilities in specific areas (savant skills)

  • Below-average cognitive performance in certain domains

One of the core characteristics often seen in ASD is difficulty understanding or relating to the emotions of others, which can affect empathy and social engagement.

Current Therapies & Treatments for Autism

1. Behavioral & Communication Therapy

Customized approaches like behavioral interventions, speech therapy, Alternative Augmented Communication (AAC), and social skills training to support communication, learning, and emotional development. The use of technology via the ipad and Virtual Reality can also bridge the communication divide.

2. Sensory Integration

Occupational and Physical therapy help children manage sensory sensitivities and movement challenges, with personalized strategies to reduce overstimulation and improve daily functioning.

3. Environmental Support

Building modifications in the environment to create calming, autism-friendly spaces that reduce sensory triggers and increase comfort. Examples include changing lighting, clothing, using filtering headphones, and a sensory room.

4. Nutritional & Biomedical Support

Gut health, food sensitivities, and nutrient levels, autism-friendly diets, supplements, and biomedical support to improve mood, behavior, and focus.
